BEA certifies WebLogic Server on multiple platforms, JVMs, and operating system configurations. BEA only certifies platforms that pass rigorous internal testing. In some cases, there are problems with certain JDKs, operating systems, and hardware platforms that prevent BEA from certifying WebLogic Server in some environments. The Platform certification detail table, below, is frequently updated on the BEA website and contains the latest certification information on various platforms.

BEA strongly recommends that customers deploy applications using WebLogic Server only on a certified platform. We also suggest that customers regularly check Sun website often for information and patches recommended by Sun.

Support for mixed client/server JVMs

BEA specifically certifies Java (RMI, not HTTP) clients to run in the same version of the JVM used to run WebLogic Server. With the exception of Windows NT (see below), deployments using different JVM versions for the client and server are not supported.

On Windows NT, BEA has successfully tested client applications running under JDK 1.1.7 accessing a WebLogic Server running with JavaSoft JDK 1.2.1 and JDK 1.2.2.

If you use Microsoft SDK for Java, you must run both WebLogic Server and RMI clients with the Microsoft JVM. It is not possible to run RMI clients under the Microsoft SDK against a WebLogic Server running with a non-Microsoft JVM.

BEA is constantly testing new Java environments and platforms. Check this page often for the most current information.

Platform support for WebLogic Server

WebLogic Server is a 100% Java application and runs on platforms with a standard Java runtime environment.

Note
WebLogic software is not supported with the Solaris or Windows NT JDK 1.1.8. Please use the JVM recommended for your platform in the table below.

We test our software with a variety of platforms in a variety of Java environments. Our multi-platform testing program contributes to the high quality of our software by uncovering bugs that only appear in some Java environments. We fix bugs we find in WebLogic, but sometimes we uncover bugs in a particular Java environment or in the underlying operating system. When we uncover bugs such as these, we report the bug to the vendor and work towards a solution. We may also attempt to work around the bug in our software. For some platforms, we specify a particular version of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) or operating system patches needed to run WebLogic Server.

The following sections list platforms that we use in our testing program.

  • WebLogic platform summary summarizes the current versions of WebLogic supported on each platform.
  • Platform certification detail contains more detailed information, including recommended JVM versions and, when appropriate, other prerequisites or recommendations, such as operating system patches or kernel configuration values.

Click the platform in the summary table to go to the detailed information in the second table.

We have certified and provide full support for these platforms only. We are working on certifying more platforms. Please contact your sales representative for information about platforms not listed on this page.

Important. To get the best performance and scalability with WebLogic Server, you must choose a JVM that uses native threads, not "green threads."

Note
Reference and Vendor-Unsupported platforms are not recommended for customers whose applications/applets will be released as products or who need a platform with optimized performance. These customers should use production releases. Most reference and alpha platforms are not supported by the vendors that release them. BEA Supports customers who deploy on Certified Reference and Alpha platforms. However, customers who do so should be aware that they are deploying on platforms unsupported by the respective third-party vendors and plan their systems accordingly. In some cases, bugs have been discovered in production systems built with WebLogic Server that rely on vendor-unsupported platforms. Since there are no third-parties responsible for the platform code, issues were unable to be resolved.

Platform Support for WebLogic Enterprise Connectivity

The WebLogic Enterprise Connectivity feature is available in WebLogic Server versions 4.0.3 and greater. WebLogic Enterprise Connectivity allows you to execute CORBA objects in a WebLogic Enterprise (formerly M3) domain from WebLogic Server servlets and EJBs. It is enabled by creating an IIOP connection pool in the weblogic.properties file and then writing server-side Java code to use the connection pool.

WebLogic Enterprise Connectivity currently supports the following environments:

  1. WebLogic Server 4.0.3:

    • Solaris 2.6 or Windows NT 4.0
    • JDK 1.1.7_08a
    • WebLogic Enterprise 4.0 (or M3 2.2)

  2. WebLogic Server 4.5.1:

    • Solaris 2.6 or Windows NT 4.0
    • JDK 1.1.7_08a or JDK 1.2.x (more information)
    • WebLogic Enterprise 4.0 (or M3 2.2)
