Striving for Quality of Interactive Systems

 Dr. Marcin Sikorski, Department Head,

Department of Ergonomics and Maintenance, Gdansk University of Technology (Poland)

Quality of interactive systems may be expressed not only in technical characteristics, but primarily in terms of actual user satisfaction and perceived system usability. Evaluating usability of an interactive system requires applying a set of user-based measurement techniques, which remain in focus of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. Current development of Information Technology intensifies efforts for expanding the toolbox for planning and evaluating usability of various interactive products, from consumer electronics to complex web sites. A prospective approach, joining usability studies, consumer research and selected quality management techniques will be discussed in this talk.  Presented examples will illustrate opportunities of a new approach, its risks and relationships with current software engineering practice.
