The CACAO JVM and Free Java
The CACAO Java Virtual Machine (http://www.cacaojvm.org/) is a research virtual machine developed at the Vienna University of Technology back in 1997. It started with a simple JIT compiler targeted for the Alpha architecture. In the meantime, CACAO's JIT compiler is ported to 6 architectures, uses GNU Classpath as Java core library and is available in various GNU/Linux distributions. The current development is focused on adaptive optimizations integrated in a new optimizing compiler. This talk will introduce CACAO itself, the JIT compiler and the current development, but also other free JVMs and the problem with "The Java Trap" (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/java-trap.html).
