Class-A denotes the highest quality standard for industrial surfaces such as a car body. The characterization, computation and interactive modeling of such optimal surfaces poses serious challenges on the mathematics of discrete surfaces and the efficient processing of the underlying meshes. The talk provides an overview on recent work on the underlying variational methods, discrete curvature operators and noise removal techniques. Applications to real-world problems in CAD and to mesh compression in Computer Graphics will be given.
