Free Software - The Future of Freedom for Computer Users

Digital information technology makes it easier for all of us to copy and modify information. But not everyone wants it to be easier--most programs have an owner who seeks to be the only one who can copy and modify it.

In contrast, Free Software is software that grants all users the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve it. In 1984, Richard Stallman launched the GNU project to develop a new operating system called GNU, which would be compatible with Unix and entirely Free Software. Today some ten million people use a variant of the GNU system, which is often called "Linux".

In his talk, Richard Stallman will describe the goals, philosophy, methods, history, status, and future plans of the GNU project.
