Management in the Web Informationsverwaltung in Netzen |

In this seminar we investigate issues and proposed solutions of internet scale data management. A good starting point for studying the problems involved are peer-to-peer file sharing systems like Gnutella, Freenet and others.
One of the most important issues is the localization of information. Distributed
hashing and other forms of data indexing are used for identifier based
object access. Otherwise content based localization is needed. We will cover
both topics.
Middleware is a software layer which hides technical apects like distribution from application programms, see e.g. Corba. Such layer is very important in mobile systems and other systems, where computer nodes can come and go at any time.
A particular aspect of many computing systems is fault tolerance. Replication is one of the primary techniques for implementing this particular middleware feature. However replication in widely distributed networks with many thousands of node is different from what is known from distributed databases. We will study replication and information propagation algorithms which are suited for these environment.
In the seminar we will deal with these issues.

Note: You are invited to give a talk in English, but this is not a must. The slides should be in English or German depending on the language of your talk. The topics suggested and the papers mentioned should stimulate your interest. The talk should NOT be a simple translation of one of the papers, but should reflect your own investigations. Students working already on a thesis or research assistants are invited and should be ready to give a talk. Scheinkriterien: - You have written a research paper on the topic of your talk ready ( >=10 pages). - A draft of the paper is to be handed in 10 days before the seminar (Monday). - You will get back a corrected Version the following thursday. - Hand in the slides 3 days before the seminar. - slides and paper are available electronically one day before your seminar talk. - You had a least 2 meetings with your advisor before the talk Your talk will be canceled, if your slides or paper are not ready the day before the seminar takes place.
