Algorithms for the simultaneous comparison of several DNA or protein
sequences tend to rely on knowledge of their evolutionary relatedness.
At the same time, determining an evolutionary tree for a set of sequences
generally requires a multiple alignment. This talk will suggest a heuristic
approach to deal with this vicious circle. This approach sheds some light
also on the role of an evolutionary tree in sequence comparison which is
in turn used for designing a new algorithm for the identification of sequences
related to a given family.
This is joint work, partly with Arndt von Haeseler and partly with
Marc Rehmsmeier.
